Assessing risks in uncharted territories

Understanding the mining legacy.

The UK’s mining legacy dates back to Neolithic times, leaving behind a tapestry of hidden challenges for modern development. From the late Stone Age extraction of chert through the Roman extraction of metals and salt right up to the extensive coal mining operations of the Industrial Revolution, the UK has a long and varied history. We understand the impact that mining can have on development land and with over 173,500 recorded mine entries and countless more unrecorded, we delve deep to assess risks associated with shallow mine workings and mine entries.

A mining legacy refers to past mining impacts, including contaminated soils, ground instability, and abandoned shafts. Sirius conducts geotechnical and environmental assessments to ensure safe development on former mining land.

There are estimated to be over 405,000 abandoned mineshafts across the UK, including more than 175,000 coal mine entries. Many are unrecorded, so comprehensive site investigation is critical before development.

No. Mining legacy issues can exist on greenfield sites located near historical mining operations. Minerals were often extracted from beneath surrounding land, not just directly beneath mines.
